Van Gogh, whose life has become a legend, was a schoolmaster in England, a missionary to the miners in Belgium, and finally, in 1880, an artist. After his contact with other painters in Paris, his style changed radically to the brilliant color and thick, swirling brushwork of his Arles period. A violent quarrel with Gauguin precipitated the first of his periodic attacks of madness in which he cut of part of his ear. As famous as he is today, he only sold one during his lifetime.
